Experience is everything in photography. Weddings, newborns, local, portraits whatever it is, if you have experience, you can be a successful photographer.
Portfolios
Having a strong portfolio is the number 2 biggest aspect to becoming a successful photographer. From a new-user point of view this is this first thing they'll see.
Branding
Have a strong brand image and you'll ensure people will find your photography memorable. This includes a great logo, solid colour schemes and more importantly a memorable name.
Marketing
Photographers for some reason believe that even without any marketing people will come to them. £100 per year is not a marketing budget guys. Unless you are spending £500 per month at least on pro-active marketing, do not moan when you are not getting as many customers as you'd like.
